The Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Finals were held from the 16th of November 2017 till the 19th. A 4 day racing celebration with the last two days set for the world finals with all the racing teams from the US, Europe and Asia competing in 1 packed arena.
The Asia’s defending champion Dilantha Malagamuwa was participating in the aggressive European series this season. At the world finals qualifiers on the 17th on November, Dilantha Malagamuwa was able to get a grid position of P18 (position 18) and P13 respectively for the 1st and 2nd race. Due to several crashes and safety car measures been taken the race only had a very limited timing to record the lap time for the Qualifiers. The first race of the World finals took place on the 18th of November in which Dilantha participates in the AM class category. With a massive crowd attending the event, the grand stand was filled with more than 500 Sri Lankan supporters chanting ‘”Sri Lanka… Sri Lanka..”as the Blue Lankan car enters the grid position on the racing track .
The first race takes off and Dilantha Malagamuwa swoops through the other Lamborghinis within the first lap to reach 16th. Gradually surpassing all the cars in the middle order, Dilantha reaches the 8th place before entering the mandatory Pits stop at the pit window. Having an additional 3 seconds added to his pit timing; since he’s driving the car by himself throughout the race, Dilantha exits the pit on time and becomes 12th on the race. Pit lane traffic puts a little pressure on the timing delaying the stop by 1 more second. With the greatest challenge and more crashes faced Dilantha manages to reach the 4th place with only 6 minutes left on the clock. With an effort to surpass the 3rd, Dilantha gets closer and manages to pass the car with yet another crash after the 3rd car spins in the middle of the track, destroying his front bumber. Before the next turn Dilantha was knocked out of the track by an aggressive driver who blocked his turn in front of him kicking him out race and snatching his 3rd place with only 5 mins left on the race. Although Race 1 concludes with a disappointing knock out for Dilantha; since he was able to complete 75% of the race, he was classified as 11th taking his timing into consideration.
Race 2 was held on the 19th afternoon. Although the blue Sri Lankan car was Qualified for P13, due to the crash incident on the 1st race, Dilantha was kicked back to start at 15th on the grid. The Race takes off and Dilantha gets a good start, but faces a brutal blockage on T2 caused by races leaders Hardwick (US) and Yuki Harata (US), several cars are block by this nasty spin including Dilantha and Asian Champion Haryanto. Dilantha then leaves the blockage and joins the race fleet but being kicked back to 16th. Keeping his pace clean and consistent and takes down his opponents one by one and gets to a good stand before the mandatory pit stop. Has a clean and perfect timing on the stop and tries to avoid the pit lane traffic by leaving on time. Dilantha is now on 8th place behind the current Asian Champion Harayanto. Takes the lead on the next turn and surpasses 4 cars gradually to get behind WLAZIK the European runner up and the winner of the first world final’s race for this year. With only 7 minutes left on the clock Dilantha take makes a phenomenal overtake on T4( turn 4), all cameras on him making it the best overtake of the race, the crowd goes crazy, the pit stop is lightened up, Dilantha is now on 3rd with only 6 minutes left. Dilantha is only 0.4 seconds away from the LAURENT who is at 2nd position and closes down nearing the car on 2nd. Makes another masterpiece move to get to 2nd place surpassing the AM world champion of 2013, LAURENT and as soon as he enters the racing stretch to hunt down Montovania, who’s Leading he race and not too far away; there’s a crash report at the entrance of the pit lane between the two North American drivers . The crash is reported to be a huge one, 2 cars colliding and spreading debris all over the track. Race Control notifies a Red Flag and with only 5 minutes left, the race is stopped, Pit Manager Gianluca runs to the lane to confirm Dilantha’s Place and then he brings the good news to the pit box, “Dilantha Finished 3rd”. The crowd is ecstatic, the pit is overwhelmed with the finish, and the crowd starts running, waving the Sri Lankan flag in the air towards the podium to witness the car entering the pit lane. Out comes a very emotional Dilantha Malagamuwa, hugs everyone with tears in his eyes, what a memorable day for Sri Lanka and this legendary Racer.
Although he was 2nd when the race was red flagged according to the FIA bylaws when a red flag is put and the race ends and the previous lap’s position is taken as the final results.
Dilantha is then interviewed by Dakota who is the correspondent for Motorsports.Tv; Dilantha says “I’m the happiest Sportsman in the world right with all these people behind me (The Sri Lankan Fans)” with tears in his eyes …
There’s Baila, Drums and papare echoing, all over Imola Circuit, the celebrations starts. Dilantha Finishes 3rd in the 2nd race of the World Finals and 5th overall in World Standings.
